PRE-BOOM OR RECESSION. |
I now decree that the word recession is to be deleted forthwith from the English language, and why, you may well ask, do I agree to decree this? Well, during my break last week I took it upon myself to investigate this (now) so called pre-boom, and am very pleased to tell you that the present economic situation affects a relatively small amout of the population. So here now is a brief list of those people who are not affected by the "Pre-boom" : |
• |
All T.D,S, All Ministers, Senators, Co. Councillors. etc. (Note, if you are out of a job at the moment, you might consider a career in politics because the academic qualifications needed are zero) |
• |
But, to continue my list. Bankers, Developers, Heads of building societies, (This job is a real beauty because the pension prospects are quite good) |
|
| There are many others who are not affected, but I think you get my drift. |

Expect severe disruption to Austin Friars St. in the next few weeks. Apparently, the on-going upgrading of the sewerage works in the town has now reached this point, However it has been promised that all measures will be implemented to keep disruption to a minimum. A local councillor has informed me that the works in Austin Friars St. are to be carried out underground by a "mechanical mole" (honest to God, I'm not coddin ya!) Sure ye'd never know what they'd find when they're down there, maybe they'll strike oil! |

THE BOWSIES ARE AT IT AGAIN |
Yes, these "scum of the earth" are going around the town mugging and beating up innocent people. They need to be stopped, once and for all, and there is no point whatsoever in punishing them with a rap on the nuckles and a fine, because we all know where their money is coming from, US, THE TAXPAYERS!. |
Lately, we have seen a lot of very good Gardaí and detectives retiring from the local force. These men will be very sadly missed, because these same men, in their hey-day knew how to enforce the law. Their hands were not tied by stupid legislation and you can rest assured that the "bowsies" who are now terrorising some of our citizens, would not last five minutes with any of them. let us also hope that the replacements for these decent men will not be constrained by people who may have cause to be absent from the force on account of their entitlements to causitive leave. |

THE STABLES |
The music scene is very vibrant in Mullingar at the moment, and one of the best venues is "THE STABLES" Dominick St. If you plan to visit Westmeath this year do drop in to the Stables for the best of all types of music. |
| |
|
| |
|
THE PORTERHOUSE |
The Porterhouse in Dominick St. is the place to be every Thursday night if you are a fan of Irish trad music. James Keane and Jimmy Whelan, with their internationally acclaimed "buck shee" céilí band are on hand there to regale you with the very best, and next thursday night promises to be a special night as James has promised to perform on the pipes "absolutely naked". The mind boggles. |

They Still Flock to See Joe by Jack the Stroller |
On Tuesday the 24th March, two life long fans of Joe Dolan travelled all the way from Ballycotton, County Cork to visit Joe's final resting place in Walshestown and the splendid statue of Joe in the Market Square in the city of Mullingar. The two ladies followed Joe all their life and decided to take the pilgrimage to Joe's grave and statue. But they nearly didn't make it to the fine city of mullingar as they got lost 3 times on their way up here. The two ladies stayed in Mullingar for 3 days altogether staying in the Mullingar Park Hotel and most importantly as they said to me, they did a bit of shopping as well. |
The Joe Dolan Memorial is now fast becoming a huge tourist attraction in Mullingar, bringing much wanted revenue to shops and hotels around Mullingar. With this in mind I think there should now be a Joe Dolan museum set up in Mullingar. Of course the Dolan family would have to be involved, as a museum without costumes, artefacts and memorabilia would not be a museum at all. Mullingar could become another "Graceland". Now that's something to think about in the coming months. |

Free The Carey Bridge Two: The Campaign Goes On By Jack The Stroller |
Recently a visitor to Mullingar pointed out to Westmeath Showcase that there is a huge lack of picnic areas in the town of Mullingar. So Jack the Stroller decided to investigate this matter and found out to his horror that 2 lovely picnic benches have been locked away behind bars by the council for a number of years at the Carey Bridge. |
Since I highlighted this cause a month ago, Westmeath Showcase have received a lot of support for these benches to be relocated as seen in the pictures below. The area in question in the pictures could do with a genuine clean up and a nice picnic area is just the tonic for such a place. So on behalf of these lonely picnic benches, we proclaim "Free the Carey Bridge two". |
Westmeath Showcase hope our lovely town councillors or county councillors raise this matter and free the Carey Bridge two. Whatever councillor does the good deed, we at Westmeath Showcase will give ye loads of coverage for your kind act. |
|
|
This area at the Carey Bridge should be a designated
town picnic area and should be signposted aswell |
This is an artist's impression of what the area should look like |
|
|
As you can see the 2 picnic benches have been
behind bars for a couple of years now! |

What defines a Leader in these unsure times by Jack the Stroller |
A few weeks ago a young chap and his cousin went up to see the Dáil in action and to get a general tour of the Dáil. The young fellow in question was Stephen Lynch and Dylan Mullarney. They both had a great day and met loads of very important people. However the one person they especially wanted to see and meet face to face was our Taoiseach Brian Cowen. But as it happened Brian was unable to see the two lads as he had urgent business to attend to. The two lads Stephen and Niall still had a great experience and went home that day very happy. |
But a few days later, two letters arrived in the post one for Stephen Lynch and his cousin Dylan from the Taoiseach himself apologising for not being there. Here is the following letter. Stephen and Dylan were so happy to receive a letter from the Taoiseach that it more than made up for not meeting them on the day. I think this sort of letter speaks volumes about our leader, it was such an easy thing to do, but yet it meant the world to this young child. |
The fact that the letter was so much personalised again says a lot about Mr Cowen. The Taoiseach understands these young boys represent our future generation. That no matter who you are, a little goes a long way. Well done Brian, keep up the good work. There is an old saying "A politician thinks about the next election, A true Statesman thinks about the next generation" |

Austin Friars Hotel Reopens Under New Management by Jack the Stroller |
For once there is a bit of good news in Mullingar city. The Austin Friars Hotel in Austin Friars Street was closed for a short while. But now it has reopened under new management and is employing 6 people at the moment. The hotel is open only Friday, Saturday and Sun at present. But in the coming weeks it will be open 7 days a week. The hotel rooms are finished to a high standard and are very spacious. Westmeath Showcase wish the new management team the very best in their new venture. |

Dumping Of Rubbish In Broad Day Light by Jack the Stroller |
For once I don't blame the authorities, I blame the selfish people who have littered our normally beautiful streets of Mullingar. The Gardaí can't be everywhere and either can the litter wardens. However if the C.C.T.V cameras were working, we might just know. But that will be never as the C.C.T.V cameras will probably never be switched on or even manned, but hark, what's this i hear. Oh Yes everybody the Local elections are coming and i bet they might just be turned on for a short while!! We at Westmeath Showcase wait with bated breath. |

And Finally... Cllr.Frank McIntyre and Cllr.Betty Doran To Run For Europe (World Exclusive) by Jack the Stroller |
As we go to press on Sunday night, we have just learned that two independent Town Councillors from Mullingar have decided to run for the European Elections. Two of Mullingar's most outspoken town Councillors, Betty Doran and Frank McIntyre have decided to contest the European elections in June. It is understood that they have decided to do an Obama on it, so to speak! |
|
They are going on a World Tour to Promote themselves. Their first port of call is the CONGO. They will tour the Congo on a fact finding mission. And claim huge amount of expenses to fund their campaign. The town council are planning to throw a huge party in their honour as they leave Mullingar on April 4th. The town bus link was to parade Betty and Frank through town, but Betty being a former Green insisted on an ass and cart. |
